Just because it's summer vacation doesn't mean that you have to stop learning. Here are some suggestions to practice those skills we worked on so hard this year.
1. Sign up for the summer reading program at the Oceanside Public Library.
2. Go to the park. While you are on the swings, practice counting by 2's, 5's and 10's to 100.
3. Make a collection of rocks. Divide them up by whether they're shiny or dull, big or little, rough or smooth.
4. Make a list of all the words you know from the word families we studied (-at, -ap, -it, -ill, for example).
5. Make a set of math flash cards with the facts from 1-20. Play Go Fish with them by matching the answers.
6. Plant some flower seeds in dirt from your yard. Then plant the same kind of seeds in some sand from the beach. Is there a difference in how they grow?
7. Write a letter to a relative.
8. Read a book to your pet. If you don't have a pet, then read one to a stuffed animal.
9. Cook something (with mom's help, of course). Use measuring cups and spoons.
10. Draw a picture of all the bugs that you can find in a small square of your yard.
11. Find a picture in a magazine whose name begins with each letter of the alphabet. If your parents will let you cut them out, make a scrapbook, a letter to each page. Now look for pictures that end with each sound.
12. Write down all the ways you can get the answer 9 when you add or subtract.
13. Write a story about where you would like to go on a trip. Now draw a map of how to get there.
14. Put price tags on your toys. Get some coins and have mom and dad sell the toys to you. Remember, the store clerk doesn't like all pennies!
15. Think up all the things you can do 100 times. Then do them.
16. Write to Esmeralda. She really misses you.
17. Make a schedule of your daily chores. Record when you did them to the nearest 5 minutes.
18. Write about a pretend trip to the rainforest. Describe what animals you would see, how it feels, what you could find to eat.
19. Read books. A lot of books. Oodles and oodles of books!
20. HAVE FUN! See you in August.
